When a woman from his hometown was murdered, the case appeared to be a dead end, until a tenuous link to Williamson led to his trial and conviction. The evidence and witnesses were flimsy at best, but that didn't stop Williamson from being sentenced to death. Not all of John Grisham's books are legal dramas--sometimes he writes mysteries set in the South as well. A Painted House is set in the s and is about a seven-year-old, Luke, whose life is turned upside down when two groups of migrant workers come to his family's cotton farm, inciting a dangerous chain of events that includes a murder, changing Luke's life forever.
Follow it up with Camino Island , a mystery about a rare book dealer and a thrilling literary heist. John Grisham also occasionally stretches outside of the mystery and thriller genres to write humorous books. His best-known work outside of the mystery genre is the novel Skipping Christmas , about a couple who are fed up with the stress and chaos of everything that comes with celebrating Christmas, so they decide they're going to skip it and go on a cruise instead.
But their decision isn't accepted by their friends and neighbors, to hilarious results. Theo Boone is only thirteen, but he's wanted to be a lawyer for as long as he can remember, and can already play the role pretty convincingly. When a real murder case rocks his town and he stumbles upon a piece of confidential information, Theo is drawn into the case, making promises to witnesses that he will have to fight hard to keep.
This is the start to a fun series for aspiring lawyers! Theodore Boone, Kid Lawyer. The Abduction. The Accused. The Activist. The Fugitive. Between , he served in the House of Representatives in Mississippi.
Having been a criminal lawyer for about a decade, the author has plenty of knowledge to infuse his books with, and this shows greatly. No wonder so many of his books have been adapted to movies, as they are not only chilling and suspenseful but also very realistic. Along with Tom Clancy and J. Rowlings, John Grisham is one of the few authors who has sold 2 million copies of first printing books.
His first novel, A Time To Kill , published in , 4 years after he started writing it, has an interesting genesis. Having been a lawyer for so many years, one day he heard a young girl telling her story to the court, and he got so interested that went to listen to the whole case.
And so his first idea for a book came to life. I seriously doubt I would ever have written the first story had I not been a lawyer. I never dreamed of being a writer. I wrote only after witnessing a trial. As soon as he finished writing A Time To Kill, he was already working on his second novel, The Firm — which ended up to be pretty much the book that propelled him into instant fame.
Until the author got the serious writing fever and wrote a novel a year. In he took a small break from writing to go back to being a lawyer with a case that he won. One of my favorite John Grisham book is The Guardians , a standalone legal thriller novel. It features the Guardians, a group similar to Project Innocence, which takes on the case of Quincy Miller, a young black man who was framed for killing Keith Russo, his lawyer.
Cullen Post, who founded the Guardians, is its sole investigator, so he takes on the case and starts checking the facts. However, here he might have gotten more than he bargained for when some powerful people are ready to kill again just to keep their secret hidden. John Grisham is best known for his legal-themed thriller novels, but there are plenty of other options to pick from. His success worldwide is uncontended. This is made clear by the fact that his books have been translated into an amazing 42 languages.
We propose two reading orders. The first one is a linear order that mixes genre, publishing dates, and series. The second one begins with his series and then jumps onto the standalone novels. The former has two titular characters; Jake Brigance and Theodore Boone.
