The Sydney suburban train services that ran between about 1 am and 4 am were replaced by buses due to the electoral policy of the newly elected Griener Liberal govt. Many of these trains still run as empty carriages movements but no longer take passengers, that function has been replaced by Nightrider buses. Nick Griener claimed that this method would reduce public transport losses but generally the extra buses cost about as much to operate as the trains and are even harder to find where and when they are running.
Many passengers found these late night trains difficult to use because they found it hard to comprehend that these trains would only stop if required at minor stations.
They were also sometimes reluctant to talk to strange railway guards late at night. Location: On the rails. During the shutdown period, it is also a great time to do minor maintenance onthe trains inb the sheds, as well as cleaning etc. Sometimes they might do some trackwork, but I doubt it would be much down there. You do have a point with this though: I just noticed that the Hunter Line continues to operate thru the nite.
One would think it would be the other way around, you shut the Hunter line down for a few hours, and keep the Metro areas going on hourly services through the night. But oh well. It would only require 1 set to keep that Hunter service going, as really, it is only two extra services Alltrains Train Controller.
Country trains always have been different to city trains because of the distances that they travel you cannot compare the two. I believe that the main reason is safety of the public with the behaviour of the young when they are drunk and abusive or high on drugs or being big men when they are in gangs, and with the ethnic gang problems that are now around Cronulla to travel on the trains in the early hours is dangerous.
Location: In the shed, putting down another brew. Nightride busses are a nightmare!!!!!! I use to catch one into central railway Square , living on the Illawarra line there was 1 every 30 mins, 1 from Cronulla and one from Sylvania I think. Even still the buses ranged from 15mins early!!!!
Most other areas only had 1 per hour. Why not have a hourly service of a 2 or 4 car set with transit Officers. Make them all stations say from Sydney terminal to Redfern, Mactown, etc all the way to Penrith.
And another 10 to 15 mins later to Campbelltown via granville, again all stations. Other could have a shuttle, ie, Richmond to Blacktown and meet up with the Penrith train, same from sutho to Cronulla and for sefton park junction. The Beer Baron.
At my work I am sure it is a bit more however people who start at say 4 am only get the penalty until 7 or 8 am. Location: Newcastle. To sleep! Location: Sydney, Australia. Once caught the Illawarra line nightride. The driver didn't do anything about it. I had to sit on that awfully smelling bus until I got to Arncliffe. Thanx Rodo, yours seems like the most definitive answer to why trains stop running at nite.
Berr Baron is on to something, an all stops train running even once an hour on every line would still be better than the buses.
