Chandra decks. What spells would I cast? Magic is filled with these kinds of cards, and "metagaming" is the natural inclination for anyone who knows what their opponent will bring to the table. See Jace vs. Note that we would never put Chill or Boil into these decks, as those two cards are far more powerful in this matchup than Jace or Chandra could ever hope to be, even more powerful than every other card in the game.
In fact, the only usable hosers I found were Ether Well and Parch. However, playtesting revealed that even Guma and Narwhal were invincible, unstoppable clocks that would require Bottle Gnomes or Moonglove Extract s in both decks as answers. The intermediate decklists for Jace vs. Chandra are almost unrecognizable.
Here's a few of the more whimsical cards that were cut in playtesting:. I found these cards fantastically fun, but they were ultimately purged during "The Great Powering Up" of both the Jace deck and the Chandra deck. What can I do, The Pit is full of spikes! Jace received a smattering of morph creatures like Wall of Deceit to convey his illusion magic and a complement in secret red hoser Spire Golem. Chandra's got a raw power-level upgrade with Flametongue Kavu as well as her own sideways blue hoser in Flamekin Brawler.
All in all, Erik Lauer did an exceptional job developing the back-and-forth game play of these decks even at their increased power level. Coupled with a high curve, Chandra is more than capable of utilizing six or more Mountain s of mana each turn for good effect. Chandra also has the largest blowout potential with Hostility into Fireblast, creating 18 power of haste combat damage out of nowhere.
Her Keldon Megaliths is an intentional unsolvable threat. Chandra Nalaar herself is a very dangerous board controller that will quickly take over the game my personal favorite planeswalker design.
Jace's creatures are the better defenders by miles. Jace's game play against Chandra largely consists of fortifying a stable defense then electing a solitary flyer or Guile to play offense before a stray Fireball or Cone of Flame fries your best-laid plans.
Card drawing is in your favor but you are burdened with the necessity of finding suitable answers for Chandra's questions, or else a seemingly innocuous Flamekin Brawler will melt your life total. Jace vs. Here we see Jace Beleren the planeswalker, uncowled and illusion-ready:.
Next is Chandra Nalaar with her signature fire-imbued gauntlets, goggles, and crimson locks:. The final resting place for the "Jace drawing cards" alternate art was Fact or Fiction :. As promised, here was see Chandra laying down a Seal of Fire for Jace to walk into:. Bottle Gnomes. Brine Elemental. Chandra Nalaar. Chandra Nalaar Japanese Alternate Art. Chartooth Cougar.

I drop it, and play another Suspend card- this one a Riftwing Cloudskate.
Still hampered by resources, I am powerless to prevent Sam swinging in hard the next turn with a pumped up Whelp for 5, then bringing out a Soulbright Flamekin. Next turn, Sam recasts it, and adds a Seal of Fire for good measure. She dumps six mana into the Flamekin, which refunds her eight, and pumps the Whelp up as she swings in with it, saving just enough mana to drop a second Whelp.
I tap two and show Counterspell. I summon a Mulldrifter after attacking for four. Turn 9 finally breaks my back. Sam turns land sideways and lays down the Furnace Whelp, a Flamewave Invoker , and then Firebolts the Cloudskate for good measure. Now on the play, I get off to another slow start characteristic of the deck, laying a land and passing for my first two turns. Passing to Sam, she plays an Oxidda Golem and swings in with it.
Sam responds by playing an Inner-Flame Acolyte and swinging in with it for an early 4. My Mawcor goes into the red zone on turn 5, then I summon a Mulldrifter who tops my hand up. But the momentum swings right back the other way when Sam snipes my Mulldrifter with a Flametongue Kavu. Passing to Sam, she goes aggressive- resummoning the Pyre Charger then swinging in with everything except the poor Brawler.
The board clears out as her Charger is killed by the Spire Golem while the Mulldrifter and the Kavu trade. I un-Morph the Seer and use it to block the Acolyte- neither dies. The damage comes to an end. I Gush on the end of turn 9 to fish for options, and come up with another Spire Golem and an Ancestral Vision. Sam comes in at last with the Flamekin Brawler and I accept the trade for the Golem. Sam goes for broke and Demonfires Guile, but a Condescend thwarts her ambition.
She tries again the next turn after Guile pays her back for 6, taking her to 8 , starting with a Fireblast. She had an Incinerate ready as a follow-up, but with the Fireblast squandered and at 4 life, she scoops.
She similarly has no turn 2 play aside from land, and I drop a Wall of Deceit. Turn 5, and Sam recasts the Invoker. Her loss of momentum, though, is telling- my play is an Air Elemental. Sam responds with a Chartooth Cougar , and pings me for 1 to build up Chandra.
She passes turn, and I make an absolutely abysmal misplay. So dreadful, in fact, that the full wretchedness of it would only occur to me later typing up this article.
Short version is this: I needlessly sacrifice my Djinn. Sam had some nasties on the board and her Planeswalker in play. I went to untap, and my eyes settled on the Djinn for a moment. I was furious with myself for making such an obvious mistake, put the Djinn in the dustbin and continued on with the game. Only now as I write this, though, did the full stupidity of my play reveal itself.
