As an Aussie, I always cringe when an American actor tries it - the result is usually a Cockney pirate. Not that there's a single "Australian" accent, any more than there's an "American" one, but you get the idea.
I remember in the 80's Mel had the Aussie accent, and he kept a farm there so still went there often. I think he thought he could get further if he dropped the Aussie accent. He was so beautiful 20 years ago, now I see no appeal. Accents fascinate me. Especially when foreigners fight tooth and nail to keep their accents even if they've lived in America a long, long time. Why in the world do they both sound like they've just come off the plane from Australia and Austria, respectively, when they've both lived here roughly 40 years and lived in their home countries for only 20?
It's extremely hard for someone brought up in a non-English speaking country particularly German and Spanish speakers to speak English without an accent, regardless of how long they've lived in America. Some Danish and French actors can pull off a flawless English accent, but it's rare unless you came across when you were a kid.
I think the issue with Olivia was that her being Australian was one of her selling points, hence the continued use of the accent and the fact that she regularly returns to Australia. Nicole Kidman developed a 'trans-Pacific' accent when she was married to Tom Cruise, but she's since lost that and now speaks with an Australian accent again. Well you hit the nail on the head, r7, by saying "hence the continued use of the accent. Arnold I don't buy either. I don't disagree that it's hard for a non-native to lose the accent completely, but my point is that I don't believe his accent, with all his mangled pronunciations, is the way he should really sound at this point.
I don't really see it as "fighting" to hang on to an accent. I just suspect that some people are less influenced than others by the accents of those around them. After 38 years in Australia, my parents and brother still have their Geordie accents, whereas my sister has lost hers completely and I tend to switch back and forth depending on the company which can get interesting! Foreigners who end up in entertainment are probably an unusual case - they're marketing themselves to a specific audience.
As for Olivia, I don't think she sounds Australian at all any more, so if she's pretending she's not doing a very good job. R3, Australian actors tend to be very good at sounding genuinely American when playing American characters.
The gold standards, of course, are Heath's flawless Western accent in BBM and Judy Davis in anything, but lots of talented Australians get work here because they can blend in. I very much doubt the opposite is true. I saw a recent interview with Julian McMahon rerun on BBC America last night and was surprised that he sounds almost totally American now, not too far from the accent he uses when playing American characters. All Madonna jokes aside, I think Americans can truly pick up foreign accents if they live abroad long enough.
My aunt moved to Australia 20 yrs ago with her family and speaks with a pretty distinct Aussie accent now, a fact she wasn't even aware of until we pointed it out. Nicole Kidman does a perfect American accent, and so does Cate Blanchett. Heath Ledger's in BBM sounded spot-on, too. The queen, however, must be Angela Lansbury, who started doing her perfect American accent at least as far back as The Harvey Girls, when she was something like I think a lot of people don't even realize she's a native-born Brit.
To me the most linguistically impressive foreign-born A-list actor working in the US is Charlize Theron. She learned by watching TV and is now completely convincing. I do think it's strange that you could grow up in South Africa and not learn English, though. Most of the cast of "Without a Trace" aren't American.
Poppy Montgomery has completely lost her Australian accent.
